On November 12, 2017, in Hanoi, Vietnam Airlines signed an agreement with aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney (PW) to purchase engine products for 20 Airbus A321neo aircrafts worth over US$1.5 billion. The signing was witnessed by Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quang and US President Donald Trump, during his official visit to Vietnam.

The agreement between Vietnam Airlines and Pratt & Whitney covers the purchase of 44 PurePower Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines and the comprehensive terms of warranty, maintenance and repair of engines. GTFs are advanced and powerful engines that use 16% less fuel; produce 50% less carbon emissions; and cut noise by 75% compared to contemporary rivals. Vietnam Airlines' A321neo aircrafts equipped with GTF engines are the new version of the A321 line, the largest product line of Airbus' A320 family. The A321neo offers passengers a new level of cabin comfort, with extended exit spaces and newly designed passenger cabin doors. Vietnam Airlines is scheduled to receive 20 A321neo aircraft in 2018 and 2019.
Mr. Duong Tri Thanh, President and CEO of Vietnam Airlines, said: “This poses a great leap in Vietnam Airlines’ development of our A321 fleet. I believe this deal between Vietnam Airlines and Pratt & Whitney will help to promote bilateral economic and commercial ties between Vietnam and the USA."
